Drive an hour or two East, you will find Palm Springs, same distance west to the Ocean, or go North about four hours to Las Vegas. San Bernardino has connections to Interstate 10, 210, 215 and Hwy 30 making it a real option for commuters to Orange and Los Angeles counties. The Metrolink train station has a stop in San Bernardino as well.
